What Furniture Should Take Center Stage in a Living Room?

Posted On August 19, 2024

In some rooms, it’s easy to figure out what should be the focal point. It’s logical to make the table the center of attention in a dedicated dining room, for example. Similarly, the screen will be the focal point in a theater room.

It’s not nearly as simple to decide on a focal point in other rooms, however. One such room is the living room. In many cases, a living room may have built-in features you want to show off, such as a fireplace or bay window, or you might hang something like a TV that you want to highlight. At other times, you may want your living room furniture to take center stage, especially if you have custom furniture in the space.

Your Couch

If you want to highlight your couch, consider positioning it in a prominent position in your living room. You may want to put your couch a few inches away from a wall or you might want to place it in the center of your living room. To bring attention to the couch, position chairs so they face the couch. You can use end tables and a coffee table to separate the seating options nicely.

Having the chairs and couch positioned like that will create a natural conversation area. You can make the grouping even more obvious by placing an area rug under the chairs, tables and couch.

Chairs

Do you have some antique or avant-garde chairs you want to show off in your living room? To bring attention to them, consider placing them at unexpected angles in relation to other things. Rather than putting a chair squarely in a corner, consider angling it so the back of the chair touches both walls and the seat of the chair sits a few inches away from the actual corner where the two walls meet.

Even if your chairs are eye-catching on their own, you can draw even more attention to them by adding a few things. A pillow or a throw blanket may do the trick. If they’re still not getting enough attention, consider having your chairs reupholstered if it won’t hurt their resale value.

A Hutch

A hutch is a useful piece of living room furniture that allows you to display things that are meaningful to you. Trophies, rare books, photographs, antiques – those are just some of the things you may want to display in a hutch. In general, it’s wise to place a hutch against a wall and you may want to anchor it in position for added stability. Once it’s in place, you can use lighting to draw attention to your hutch and to highlight any special contents inside.
